More than four in ten (44%) workers say that workplace conflict is rising. Ruth Cornish spoke to HR Magazine about what HR can do given workplace conflict is on the rise and how they can support leaders to ensure an inclusive and safe culture: “Having clear communication channels and ensuring that any disputes are resolved as early as possible are key. Training managers so they have the confidence to confront any areas of potential conflict is helpful.”

New employment rules are being introduced as part of the Employment Rights Bill – and these will increase firms’ obligations and costs. Ruth Cornish spoke to the ICAEW about how firms should get ahead now. Ruth says: “Employers who get their houses in order early and start planning now to ensure they are fully compliant will show themselves in a good light and get ahead of the curve.”

The awkward Jumbotron moment, reportedly involving Kristin Cabot, the Chief People Officer (CPO) of software firm Astronomer, and the firm’s CEO, sparked viral allegations of an illicit affair. This incident has unfortunately led to a barrage of anti-HR jokes online raising a critical question for companies: when HR becomes the story, how should that organisation support its own professionals? Ruth wrote an article in HR Magazine on this topic.

After the CEO and CPO at software firm Astronomer, were caught awkwardly trying to avoid the Jumbotron’s “kiss cam” at a gig, HR Magazine asked commentators what to do when HR becomes the story. Ruth Cornish advised business leaders to act in the same way that the Astronomer firm has done: Suspend the individuals while conducting an investigation. She also advised HR professionals to consult any relationships at work guidance they may have.

A worker who was sacked after an HR chief recorded him venting his “frustrations” on a phone call has won €10,000 (around £8,700) for unfair dismissal. Ruth Cornish has been speaking to HR Magazine about this case, and advises professionals to lead by example, and adopt clear, transparent practices to ensure a fair disciplinary process. She explains that companies will need to be clear about whether an informal conversation will go on record. She stressed that, “it is acceptable to take action if a safeguarding matter has been disclosed, but that needs to be stated up front."

Recent data from Unite revealed that 75% of women in the UK do not report incidents of sexual assault at work In response, HR magazine asked how can HR educate the workforce about what constitutes sexual assault in the workplace and Ruth was featured. She emphasised companies must “ensure that all training and policies spell out very clearly what is and what is not acceptable within the workplace”.

Following the news that actor Jamie Borthwick (from EastEnders) made an offensive remark whilst filming Strictly Come Dancing last November, Ruth spoke to HR Magazine on the topic of how HR should address disability discrimination. Ruth commented, “Disability discrimination and/or prejudice, is often caused by ignorance and fear: fear of missing out or being treated less favourably. Because not everyone understands what others have to deal with.”

Ruth Cornish was featured in HR Magazine after the Football Association (FA) barred transgender women from playing women’s football, following the UK Supreme Court ruling on 16 April. Ruth commented, “the Supreme Court’s ruling is not just a legal ruling, it’s a people one”. She stressed the importance of how everyone in the workplace should feel heard, included, valued, and supported. Ruth urges workplaces to create safe spaces for employees to voice concerns; as well as review policies; train and educate line managers, and establish employee resource groups.

Ruth Cornish featured in a recent article on HR Grapevine considering whether HR was ready for AI coaching and mentoring. Ruth commented “when it comes to HR and people management, the human element is key. HR directors do tend to use AI in-part, but in my opinion, HR folk prefer dealing with other human practitioners, hence the rise of online HR communities to share problems and successes”.

The CIPD announces an amendment to the Employment Rights Bill which would enable CIPD members operating as independent HR consultants to complete additional, specialist training and professional development (on top of the CIPD’s usual membership requirements), that would authorise them to advise on settlement agreements. This exciting step change for our industry originated from a proposed idea by our own Ruth Cornish, as detailed in the article.
